Yuri Gagarin's Banjo and other stories " It's a little known fact that Russian cosmonaut and first man in space, Yuri Gagarin, was a virtuoso player of the 5 string banjo. The Russian authorities discouraged him from talking about it as they saw the instrument as a symbol of western decadence. They refused to let him take it with him on the flight. While disappointing for Yuri at the time, it was probably a blessing as there has been little or no research into the effects of weightlessness on a banjo.
